Taken up by Emilie Borie in 1900, this superb Médoc property soon began to produce wines coveted for their power and character. Three generations down the line and it's François and Jean Nony who take care of Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme. The 45 hectares of vines grow in deep gravel soil that allows for the idea conservation of heat. Made from a blend of 25-year-old cabernet sauvignon with merlot and a dab of petit verdot, and given a year in French oak.
The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. From a slightly more reticent year this is maturing and finding its feet; a well-priced cru bourgeois. The nose is a little light to start with, with a finely strung red fruit. The leather, cedar and cigar box balance the fine red currant and plum fruit. Very digestible and bone dry.
