Taken up by Emilie Borie in 1900, this superb Médoc property soon began to produce wines coveted for their power and character. Three generations down the line and it's François and Jean Nony who take care of Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme. The 45 hectares of vines grow in deep gravel soil that allows for the idea conservation of heat. Made from a blend of 25-year-old cabernet sauvignon with merlot and a dab of petit verdot, and given a year in French oak.
The 2014 vintage has quite a smoky nose with notes of tobacco and ripe green pepper over the plum fruit. There is excellent freshness to the ripe blackberry fruit palate, with a touch of pepper, rounded tannins and that continued smokiness. Still youthful with great structure, and will benefit from decanting.
