Gran Passione, Rosso, Veneto

For centuries Veneto, in the North East of Italy, has been one of the foremost wine producing regions and one of the most modernised of Italy. With its vast micro-climates, no other region offers more diversity in such close proximity than Veneto. The Gran Passione project was set up in 2013 in homage to the Venetians long standing history of being great traders and their rich wine culture. The aim was to create wines of high quality, that are affordable and representative in style to those that have been made in Veneto for centuries. Using traditional varieties, whilst honouring long-established techniques, Gran Passione create beautiful expressions of these classic Venetian wines.

One of Veneto’s true distinctions is that they are the only wine making area in the world which produce wines using dried grapes in any serious measure. The Gran Passione Rosso is a Merlot/Corvina blend made with dried, over-ripe grapes that have been harvested late in the season. The grapes decrease in acidity, reduce in water content and become concentrated in sugar, giving you this unique glossy texture, richness and sweet fruit flavour.

Cutting the grapes to dry on the vine 10 days before hand harvesting adds an Amarone-like richness to this Gran Passione Rosso. The Corvina brings cherry brightness whilst the Merlot adds deep damson fruit. With fabulously balanced acidity and integrated tannins and this big hearted Italian has a lovely chocolately finish.
