This wine domaine was created through the marriage of Jacques Rossignol of Volnay with Mado Trapet from a noted Gevrey-Chambertin family. Their sons Nicolas and David Rossignol have managed the domaine since 1990, moving subsequently to biodynamic farming.
The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Etelois comes from a parcel actually located next to the Charmes-Chambertin of Domaine Joseph Roty. There are just two used barrels this year with two-thirds whole bunch. That comes through quite strongly on the nose, rather stemmy, rendering it difficult to peer through past it and recognise the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly ferrous opening and here things begin to improve: there is a pleasing fleshiness, lovely red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit with fine tension on the finish that disguises the whole bunch addition. Once the aromatics get their act together this could be a very pleasurable Etelois.
