Chateau Caronne Ste. Gemme has been in the hands of the same family since 1900. The vineyard is in the Haut-Medoc, just inland from Saint-Julien, and has a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are classic traditionally-styled Bordeaux, with a good capacity for ageing. Plantings consist of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot and the average vine age is 25 years.
The 2011 vintage was quite a difficult one all round in Bordeaux. But Caronne Ste Gemme are really reliable wine makers and produce consistently good wines. This one has a bright nose of red fruit with a perfumed edge follows onto the palate with added nuances of smoke, black pepper and subtle oak. Still quite young and needs plenty of air to open up.
